As a Makeup Artist I have come across a number of clients who are tired of their oily skin and have difficulty in taking care of it, especially while applying makeup. I have all tried and tested solutions for selecting foundations for oily skin, so be with me till the end!
Let’s understand Oily skin
To understand the correct choice of foundations for oily skin, we first have to know our skin type and all about oily skin. There is a sebaceous gland under our skin that produces a substance called sebum which helps to keep skin healthy. Everyone has this sebum under their pores, but when too much sebum is produced, it creates greasiness and thus oily skin.
Excess sebum clogs the pores, creates a shiny appearance and it can lead to acne. When makeup is applied to oily skin, it gets melted in no time.
What do we need to do ?
We need to mattify our oily skin and use the products that control oil. Many of my clients don’t use moisturizer because they feel like the oil is already there so they don’t need to add more to it. But dear clients, the skin needs cleaning and moisturizing so that sebaceous glands don’t clog from excess sebum. You just need to use a moisturizer that needs to be oil free and non-comedogenic.
Skincare Routine for Oily skin
A proper skin care should be followed for healthy skin and it includes cleaning the face with oil control face wash. Apply toner or rose water and then use an oil control moisturizer.
I’d recommend Cetaphil or CeraVe oily skin regime. Purchase an oily skin cleanser and moisturizer from any of the above.
Flawless and long lasting makeup for Oily skin
The main problem with oily skin is that after makeup, the face gets more shiny, requires more touchups and after some time, the makeup melts away. Now, we don’t want any of this so to balance the oil we require something that is oil free, lightweight and matte foundation for oily skin.
But the long lasting makeup is not achieved only through one product, it requires a proper prep that includes a gentle cleanser, oil free and non comedogenic moisturizer and silicon based mattifying and pore minimizing primer. After this preparation, we move to the foundation for oily skin.

It is a 24hr long lasting foundation which is best for oily skin. This is an oil free foundation that controls oil and creates a flawless look. Although it’s a high end product, it is very lightweight and has mattifying properties. It is medium to full coverage foundation and covers blemishes and pigmentation.
It’s the best waterproof foundation that is also sweat proof. This foundation also covers the uneven skin and neutralizes it. It’s so lightweight that you won’t feel that you have applied makeup. For a long lasting foundation, do go for this one.

This foundation is best for all Indian skin tones. It has medium to full coverage and can last all day. It is easily blend-able and can be used for daily use. Maybelline has a large variety and its the prices are affordable . You don’t need to worry if you have acne as this foundation is really good for acne prone skin.

It is a foundation for oily skin as it’s the one which keeps oil in check and minimizes pores instantly. After applying it regularly, it strengthens the skin layer. It provides the necessary hydration to the skin and gives a smooth look.
If you have uneven skin, this foundation hides the discoloration. As the name suggests, it is long lasting and has SPF 20 so you can wear it all day without thinking about getting tanned.

It minimizes the appearance of pores and thus a smooth finish. You can apply it through the dots technique and blend it all with a sponge.

It is a medium coverage foundation which is easily blend-able. It provides hydration to the skin and doesn’t feel like you have worn any makeup. A good brand that creates an airbrush-like velvety finish. It gets settled to the skin quickly and we can’t see the difference from our natural skin. It is a full coverage foundation that stays all day. It helps to blur the pores so the skin looks smooth and flawless.
You have to first understand that only applying foundation will not do! To get the settled look , Less is More.
- Apply a limited quantity of foundation preferably using dots technique which will help reduce the thickness of the layer.
- Never forget to powder set your makeup to keep oiliness at bay otherwise the creases will deepen and the foundation will wear off.
- Use makeup sprays to get a long lasting stay. Also, keep some blotting papers handy in your bag. But don’t apply them over eye makeup you created according to eye shape.
